When dealing with a 6 ‰ downhill inlet, or an inlet that challenges train braking, the first group of turnouts is engineered specifically for protection. These protective turnouts, when activated, guide the train towards designated areas such as safety lines, special lines, or refuge lines, ensuring controlled and safe transitions.

At a 6 ‰ downhill continuation of the approach terminal, a protective turnout is essential to prevent trains from overshooting the outbound signal machine. This protective measure ensures that the train, even with reduced braking efficiency, remains on track. The turnout positioning allows access to safety lines, dedicated lines, refuge lines, and beyond, all controlled via circuit operation.

For a 6 ‰ down ramp continuation at the approach terminal, a manually-operated leveling protection fork may be installed. Despite not being circuit-driven, this fork undergoes thorough position checks. Positioned at the terminal's outer display, it aligns with visual signals, ensuring safety. The continuation road, though not visible, is reliably indicated by light signals, enhancing protection for incoming trains.

In scenarios involving dedicated lines and bustling shunting operations, protection turnouts are critical. Located at the interface of station lines and main access points, these turnouts prevent shunting trains from inadvertently entering station lines. Typically, these protective turnouts are aligned with dedicated safety lines or shunting pull-out lines, ensuring safety during busy operations.
